Guelph Gators Score Some Heavy Metal at the Waterloo Ghosts Invitational
To be sure, it was a team effort but for the Guelph Gators, it went far beyond with the U13 Red and U15 Reds, and the U17 Blue medaling at the Waterloo Ghosts Invitational, one of the provinces’ premier tournaments.
U13 Gators Red Earn Silver
The U13 Gators Red, coached by Janet Hoskin, earned silver for their efforts.
The team went 2-1 Saturday with wins over the Kawartha Lakers and Palmerston Marlin, and a loss to the Waterloo Ghosts – Kugler. Sunday saw them take the first game from Waterloo Ghosts – Yager before playing for gold against Waterloo Ghosts – Kugler.
“The girls played hard, they played smart, and they played fair,” Hoskin said. “I couldn’t ask more from any of them. So proud of how they conducted themselves.”
U15 Gators Red Take Bronze
A Friday night loss to the Waterloo Ghosts – Pietriaszko was quickly overcome as the U15 Gators Reds acquitted themselves well throughout the rest of the weekend. Saturday would see the team earn wins against Oakville Angels 2011 and the Mississauga North Tigers (Kingston), with one loss to the Waterloo Ghosts (Leduc). Sunday saw the Gators beat the Mississauga North Tigers once more before another loss to the Waterloo Ghosts (Leduc), setting up the bronze medal game against the Waterloo Ghosts – Pietriaszko
“We ran up against some tough competition but pulled through at the end,” said Coach Blayne Partridge. “Perseverance in the face of adversity is what distinguishes good from great teams. These Gators showed me that they have all the makings of a great team, no matter what colour the medal.”
U17 Gators Blue Earn Silver
Coach Trevor Sloan’s U17 Gators Blue were in tough against the eventual champs from UTM , fighting tooth and nail to the final out.
A Friday night loss to the UTM Morriston Revolution set the stage for a three-game Saturday sweep against competition from the Waterloo Ghosts Select – Doerr), the Chatham Golden Eagles and the Brampton Blazers (Burgundy) by a combined score of 36-5. Not interested in slowing down, they downed the Palmerston Marlins Teal early Sunday morning before meeting Morriston in the gold medal game.
“There was no quit. The compete level was outstanding,” Sloan said. “The team played hard and made it tough for UTM. The coaching staff is very proud of every one of our girls for their efforts, and we will build off this into the season."
